A white paper to present the outcomes of RESTART Grand Challenge 10
A new important result for the RESTART Program: a whitepaper to present the outcomes of Grand Challenge 10 – Making the network a programmable platform for running applications, which focuses on the design of an advanced Network and Service Orchestration Platform.
As of today, Grand Challenge 10 has provided an overarching vision of Network and Service Orchestration (NSO), detailing the motivations and limitations of current approaches.
NSO is indeed critical in communications and computing infrastructures to enabling automated and dynamic management of network resources and services. It plays a crucial role in ensuring efficient deployment, scaling, and optimization of services across heterogeneous networks, including radio access networks (RANs) such as 5G/6G and Wi-Fi as well as software-defined optical and IP transport networks.
It follows that NSO platforms need to be designed to manage complex, multi-domain, and multi-technology environments, while ensuring automated provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management of network functions and services.
The platform architecture proposed by the whitepaper follows the Service Based Management Architecture (SBMA) design principles defined by the 3GPP. It is modular and cloud-native, enabling orchestration across multi-domain, multi-technology environments.
Further, it integrates domain-specific and cross-domain orchestrators, closed-loop automation mechanisms, AI/ML capabilities, and Network Digital Twins for dynamic resource and service manage- ment.
The overall platform is designed to support end-to-end service lifecycle automation while maintaining flexibility and interoperability. Concrete implementations developed within RESTART are presented as examples of the functional entities composing the proposed architecture.
Additionally, the whitepaper provides insights into the evolution of orchestration platforms towards 6G networks.
