RESTART at the International Day of Light, celebrated by the University of Parma. The initiative, established by UNESCO, aims to highlight the crucial role of light and light-based technologies in science, culture and art, education and sustainable development, in fields as diverse as medicine, communications and energy.

On 15 May, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., two seminars will be held – in presence and online – dedicated to the most topical issues of photonics and telecommunication networks, with a focus on sustainability, resilience and digital transformation.

The scheduled seminars:

  • Towards more sustainable networks and processors: the use of light as a tool for energy saving – Piero Castoldi, Professor of Telecommunications and Director of the TeCIP Institute at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa.

The seminar will explore the role of photonic technologies and optical networks in reducing energy consumption, with a focus on network segments and applications in the field of artificial intelligence.

  • The decade of switching. The potential of fibre for resilience and digital transformation – Sara Mazzarella, Executive MBA at Politecnico di Milano and Technical Regulation and Spectrum Specialist at Open Fiber S.p.A.

The talk will provide an overview of the potential of fibre optics for digital transition, highlighting concrete use cases and reflections on future developments in the sector.

The event offers the opportunity to explore new technological frontiers in a context of sustainability and innovation, in which the RESTART Foundation reaffirms its commitment to support research and advanced training in telecommunications.
